Red raspberries and spice dominate the nose, palate and finish. Crisp, tart, acidic, allspice and cloves. This 2009 Grenache, with tastes of tart allspice and cloves, has a good mouthfeel, smooth and elegant, not heavy or overdone. Winemaking: 50% was fermented whole cluster, which was tread by foot twice a day. The remaining de-stemmed portion received what the winemaker has fondly term the ‘gracedance’. In observance of biodynamic principles, grace was racked under the first new moon of 2011.

He works entirely with fruit from his own superb clonal material, planted on chalk-rich hillside vineyards open to cooling sea breezes. The wines have the exotic yet varietal-accurate character and creamy sweetness to provide immediate pleasure but have the balance and structure to age. The 2007 Syrah Reva is dazzling. It possesses striking inner perfume and beautifully delineated fruit. Blackberries, blueberries, freshly cut white flowers, licorice, tar and asphalt are some of the notes that take shape in the glass. Alban gave the 2007 Reva 44 months in untoasted French oak barrels.
